Breaking Chains - Making Change

OWW 2014 - 19th to 26th October

Dear OWW organisers, supporters and contacts,

In this newsletter we want to tell you about some exciting developments at OWW but first, where we are at with this year’s theme:

The 2014 leaflet.

We are currently working on the design for this and it should be with you by the end of May. In the meantime,

  • you can download now a summary of the theme in an A5 leaflet form from ‘Recently Added Resources’.

  • Please make sure we have your up-to-date address as you might have moved, or only given us your email.

  • Please tell us if you will require more than 500 leaflets, so we can make sure we get enough printed.

Visit the website where you will find:

  • The Resources pages. On the Discussion page you will find an outline of what the theme is about and ideas, including a video, ‘The Story of Solutions’ to trigger ideas to help you start planning your OWW event.

  • Links to partners’ campaigns relevant to our annual theme, on our home page. These are updated frequently throughout the year so be sure to check them out regularly.

  • Recently Added Resources where you will find a brief A5 leaflet about the 2014 theme.

Thank you to our regular and occasional donors. If you can, please increase your support of our work by Making a much-needed Donation Here. THANK YOU.

New Developments:

Partners Advisory Group

You will have noticed that the list of partners at the foot of this newsletter has been growing!

We have been working on developing partnerships with other organisations who want to embrace OWW and involve their local supporters in using the Week to reflect on global issues with others.

Last year we engaged with some partners to follow up on the IF campaign. Then, in January this year, we met with enthusiastic representatives of 9 of our 14 Partner organisations to discuss how our theme could fit in with their work and campaigns. We considered how Partners’ resources could be shared and accessed by OWW event organisers. We identified common ground between the OWW Theme and Partner campaigns and we will draw attention to them on the OWW website though the year. As a result we agreed to continue this approach by working with an Advisory Group of partner representatives to ensure that OWW can be used by our partners, to widen and deepen public understanding of and involvement with global issues. Our next meeting in June will seek to identify specific resources. Let us know what resources you would like!

New trustee

We are close to completing the legal formalities of signing up a new Trustee who will bring some new and youthful thinking to our team.

The Climate Coalition

Formerly known as Stop Climate Chaos, of which OWW has been a member for some years, relaunched this month as the largest group of people dedicated to action on climate change and limiting its impact on the environment and the world’s poorest communities. With its sister organisations, Stop Climate Chaos Cymru and Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, its combined supporter base embraces more than 11 million people spanning over 100 organisations across the UK, from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women's groups. For more information visit www.theclimatecoalition.org

The Climate Coalition aims to involve everyone not just environmental activists! So its new campaign focuses on what we all love that is threated by climate change. Each member organisation has been asked to identify what matters most to it. OWW chose “each other”. So: For the love of each other, this spring, we are standing with over 100 organisations to call for climate action for the sake of all the things that matter most: for the love of the food on our plates; for the love of our global neighbours; for the love of Somerset, the Arctic and the Great Barrier Reef; for the love of country walks and sandy beaches. For the love of all the things we care about, we're taking climate change seriously. And we're not alone. It’s time to stand up, for the love of each other, and demand action. Will you share what you love?(www.fortheloveof.org.uk)

We would welcome volunteers to become a Local Area Events Contact and tell us what’s happening in OWW around your local area? Get in touch to find out more

With best wishes to you all as you start plannning for One World Week,

From Ingrid, Jonaid, Mina, Sally and Sarah
