Stories to Inspire

The following articles are true stories.  They tell how people from developing regions around the world have taken steps to overcome their hardship through working together in their local communities and with the wider one world community.

Use these inspiring stories as part of a talk, or as a starting point for a discussion.

Each article comes with suggested discussion points and ideas for a role-play based around the content.

Many thanks to Practical Action, the Thanksgiving Coffee Company (with Mirembe Kawomera), Muslim Aid, and CAFOD for this material.

Fadzavanhu Enterprises, Zimbabwe

Meet Esnat Yosa, Memory Chawira, Lucy Chikoani and Roster Ziko, the ladies of Fadzavanhu Enterprises - a women’s co-operative group in Chitungwiza, a satellite town of the Zimbabwean capital Harare - who have been able to improve their families’ quality of living by making peanut butter.

Delicious Peace, Uganda

Villagers in Uganda grew coffee but despaired of the low prices they received for all their hard work.  The villagers included Jews, Muslims, and Christians who tolerated each other but were not close.  In 2003 they came together to form a co-operative; they have been working together ever since to improve their coffee production and their lives.

Muslim Aid Water Projects

Working with local organisations, Muslim Aid has established projects to dig wells, supply safe water, install hand pumps, and built latrines.  The scheme not only saves lives in some of the world's poorest countries, but aims to empower communities to come together to solve common problems in a sustainable way.

Life has improved enormously for Ruth Buhayan and her eight children since CAFOD's partner, Josefina Parish Integrated Programme (JPIP), began supporting them.

Running water, three meals a day and going to school seemed impossible for many in the Philippines five years ago - but not anymore, thanks to CAFOD partner JPIP.

Mali: Case Study

In a country where 72 percent of the population live on less than $1 a day, women make up the majority of the poor but often find it the hardest to provide for their families.  Against this hostile environment, many women are working to make positive changes for their communities.
